The Fort Jackson Hotel Developing was initially built in 1926, resulting from the tragic Downey Property fire in Dec, 1925 replacing the destroyed 3-story brick Downey Property, directly across from the courthouse. The building was developed by the Pittsburgh architectural firm of Bartholomew & Smith. Building contract was awarded to Baker & Coombs of Morgantown, WV. With steel beams arriving in the summer season and building continuing throught the fall and winter, and int eh the spring of 1927. It quickly became an impressive and attractive addition to downtown Waynesburg. Constructed of red brick and trimmed with Indiana limestone. The hotel lobby was constraucted in the Italian Renaissance style with a higher-beamed ceiling. On the mezzanien floor was a main dining room seating a hundred. As effectively there was a private dining roon that seated 40. The seventy-space hotel had thirty-5 rooms on each of the second and third floors, served by two elevators. The 60-x 180-foot structure housed seven neighborhood businesses on its ground floor (three on Higher Street and 4 on Washington Street). The initial organizations integrated the Ullom & Baily Drugstore, the Fort Jackson barber Shop and the H.C. Schreiber Jewelry Retailer. (Source: The History of Greene County by G. Soon after a number of years, the developing was acquired by the county and converted into workplace space housing many county workers inside the Division of Human Services
